We’ll never be royals

Lorde knows it, we’ll never be royals. It don’t run in my blood so maybe that’s why I can’t wait for the next mag cover to hit the news stands to discover what they have been up to.

It is all Cristal, Maybach & diamonds on their timepieces? More like weddings, bumps and babies – as these covers show.

Diana was the people’s princess and captured the hearts of the adoring public with her good looks and her devotion to her boys and her charities. The magazine editors loved her and the western world couldn’t wait for another mag with Diana on the cover. First they covered her romance with Charles and then with Diana and her boys. My favourite cover though is the Vanity Fair September 2013 cover remembering her 15 years since her death.

Mary Donaldson was a gift from heaven for Australian magazine publishers. Tassie born Mary bumped into Frederick, the Crown Prince of Denmark at a Sydney pub during the 2000 Olympic Games. After some long distance dating ‘our’ Mary and Frederick tied the knot in a sumptuous ceremony at Copenhagen Cathedral in May 2004. Since then Mary has graced the covers of hundreds of Danish and Australian magazines with her good looks and growing brood. My favourite though is her Vogue Australia cover which was shot in September 2004 just after her wedding. Simple, stylish and glamorous, this cover is a knock out.

But perhaps the most popular ‘Princess’ is now is Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge. Her wedding to Prince William, Duke of Cambridge in April 2011 was watched by over 36 million viewers and subsequently featured in hundreds of magazines worldwide.

I love the local Australian Women’s Weekly cover of the wedding – showing the long awaited kiss on the Buckingham Palace balcony. More recently though the publishers focus is now on little Prince George with Hello magazine covering his public ‘first steps’ at an English Polo match.

I wonder if 20 years from now will it be Jet planes, islands, tigers on a gold leash for Prince George? We’ll have to keep our eyes on the news stands to find out.
