Rolling Stone – A Cover Retrospective

Rolling Stones latest cover features Tom Waits on the front plus interviews with Lou Reed and Werner Herzog.
This got me thinking “These guys are all oldies, but still totally goodies” So I thought i’d have a look at some of Rolling Stones most interesting covers…
This is RS’s 1969 cover of “The Disaster at Altamont”. This was a free concert that attracted 300,000 people and was tipped to be a West Coast Woodstock. At this concert there were 4 deaths, one of which was a homicide, but there was also 4 babies born. Way to balance the books!
This is a solid cover of The King! You’d swear his hips were swinging in this photo, except this is the 60′s and that Harry Potter technology is even further away from existing. Look out, son!

What's the deal with Suede Shoes? I mean such a delicate fabric in such a rugged application? c'mon people!?
Here is another shot of The King on the cover of RS, and by that of course I mean The King of 1990′s Observational Stand-Up Comedy, Jerry Seinfeld!
This cover features the whole crew of Seinfeld looking dapper in their mesh, studs and leather. Kramer looks to comfortable here.
Summer Lovin’!
This one is for the ladies! one lady, Sandra D.
Swoon!
This has to be one of my favourite RS covers ever, if only just for how elastic Meryl Streep’s face is.
“Are you man enough for David Bowie?”.
I’m not sure what this sentence means, but I love this super grainy cover of Ziggy Stardust.
Here is another of David Bowie, I’m pretty sure Madonna got the whole “constantly changing your look” thing off Bowie and I think bowie got it from the Spirit of Jazz…
I had to include this one, even though it isn’t an RS Cover. Here is Kate Moss doing her best “Alladin Sane”, paying homage to Bowie
Now I never said these were all good covers, just interesting.
How Nsync made it on to the cover of RS I don’t know. I guess we can all take solace in the fact that it says “The Biggest Band in the World” not “The Best”.
This just means there are a lot of teenage girls out there, instead of a lot of misguided music journalists.

Really good and insightful review!
